Camp Meeker smoke from Fitch Mountain

The same evening a house in Camp Meeker caught fire, the fire spread into surrounding forest and Cal Fire's air attack unit at Sonoma Airport dropped retardant on the fire so it only burned an acre or two. The huge smoke trail from the blaze was large enough to be clearly visible from Fitch Mountain, which is where this photo was taken from.

2019/04/19 Press Democrat grant announcement Buried within a long article on fire prevention projects in Sonoma County, the Press Democrat announced that Cal Fire had awarded a fire prevention grant to us. They reported that it was for an education program, but actually it's a planning grant for $77,560 to fund development of a Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP). The grant will fund paid staff time from Fire Safe Sonoma to produce materials and facilitate meetings, and North Bay Resource Conservation and Development District will administer the grant, including tax and reporting functions.

Residents of Camp Meeker will be able to participate in development of the CWPP, as will leadership of the Volunteer Fire Department and the Recreation And Park District. We will also invite Cal Fire, Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District and other environmental groups, as well as the large landowners in our area who we've already been interacting with, including Occidental Arts And Ecology Center, the owners of Blanchard Ranch, St Dorothy's Rest, Alliance Redwoods, Westminster Woods, the LandPaths NGO which stewards the Bohemia Ecological Preserve (BEP), and the Parrishes who made BEP possible and still own a large parcel of adjacent land.

We delivered an overview and roadmap of the Fire Safe Camp Meeker project, and said that an early priority would be creating shaded fuel breaks along all internal roads in Camp Meeker, to make it easier for residents to evacuate during a wildfire event. All participants seemed enthusiastic about the project, and it was suggested that Gold Ridge RCD, Fire Safe Sonoma and Fire Safe Camp Meeker work together to develop a "fiscal sponsorship" arrangement whereby Fire Safe Camp Meeker would operate under the umbrella of one of the other groups, which would apply for a grant for our projects, and administer that grant.
Official minutes of this meeting.

2018/10/28 Amy Lemmer accepted our invitation to join the core leadership team of Fire Safe Camp Meeker. Amy previously served on the board of the Camp Meeker Volunteer Fire Department, and also on the board of the Camp Meeker Recreation And Park District. She was one of the early moving forces in the restoration of fish habitat on Dutch Bill Creek by the removal of the old dam. She has also worked in a leadership capacity with Habitat For Humanity and Landmark Worldwide. For three years she distributed a community newsletter within Camp Meeker. As well as playing a general role with the core leadership team, she will have primary responsibility for community relations for Fire Safe Camp Meeker.

2018/10/16 Read a statement to the board of the Camp Meeker Recreation And Park District, requesting endorsement of the main ideas of this project. My understanding is that they will be seeking legal counsel to determine whether it's appropriate to make an endorsement like this.

2018/10/11 John Green, lead scientist and project manager of Gold Ridge Resource Conservation District responded to our approach: "We discussed the idea of a community forestry program for Camp Meeker in a staff meeting, and we're interested in working with you on it... ...Adriana Stagnaro ... will be the lead in working with you. We both think a good first step would be to meet with you ... and others involved to discuss everyone's expectations and the options for moving forward."

"As part of our responsibility to promote fire safety in our area of operations, we endorse the ideas outlined in the Fire Safe Camp Meeker proposal to set up an independent legal entity to restore the forest surrounding Camp Meeker and to promote and implement defensible space practices in order to reduce fire risk to the people, houses and infrastructure of the community."

2018/10/01 Met with Mimi Enright and Kerry Wininger of the University of California Co-operative Extension in Sonoma County , and Caerleon Safford who is the Executive Coordinator for Fire Safe Sonoma. Mimi is an expert in native plants and fire-safe home landscaping and Kerry is involved in the Sudden Oak Death Program, which includes how tan oaks killed by SOD spread wildfires in redwood forests. Caerleon has many years of experience, including within Camp Meeker, and is not only a firefighter with the Fort Ross Volunteer Fire Department, but is also knowledgeable about forestry and how houses can be made more resistant to wildfires. She invited us to introduce Fire Safe Camp Meeker at the November board meeting of Fire Safe Sonoma, with the possibility that Fire Safe Sonoma might serve as an umbrella organization to help us develop a Community Wildfire Protection Plan and get grants to do tree work such as removing Douglas Firs before they fall on houses. If this were to go ahead, then Fire Safe Camp Meeker would be able to start major restoration and defensible space projects a year or two earlier than would otherwise be possible.
